Major Areas of Research Interest: 
  • Primary area of research has been in physiologic assessment of the growth and development of the lung in infancy and childhood.
  • Specific interests include non-invasive assessment of lung mechanics in infants, the relation of lung mechanics to lower respiratory illness in children, phonopneumography (lung sounds), and airways reactivity. Our laboratory is well-staffed with technicians skilled in the measurement of lung function and in teaching these skills to physicians.
  • Other interests include epidemiology and biostatistics, as related to respiratory illness in childhood. Also of interest: pulmonary mechanics and systems physiology, infant and toddler lung development and pulmonary physiology, epidemiology of asthma and airway obstrictive disease in children, epidemiology of cystic fibrosis, clinical research in asthma, inner city asthma.
Student Opportunities Through Research: 
  • Participation in study design and completion of clinical physiologic studies with active learning
  • Many opportunities exist for research ranging from the pulmonary physiology of mechanical ventilation through the epidemiology of atopy and allergy
  • Rigorous training in the accurate measurement of physiologic phenomena-Basic data reduction and manipulation with practical statistical analysis using personal computers
  • Introduction to the joy of clinical research. Even those medical students planning on a clinical career will profit from exposure to research methods. Many opportunities exist for research in clinical practice
