Application Process

In order to enroll:

1) Please notify the program of your intent to submit an RDT proposal by emailing Grace Wagner, Program Coordinator, Senior, at grace@surgery.arizona.edu, and request an appointment with Dr. Marlys Witte, Program Director, Student Research Programs and Professor of Surgery. All application materials (explained below) need to be submitted to the Medical Student Research Office (Rm. 4402K).

2) Stop by the Medical Student Research Office, Room 4402K or 4228 and pick up a Research Distinction Track (RDT) Application Form (also available online). Please note this form is very similar to the Medical Student Research Program (MSRP) form (the paid short-term summer program) with the addition of a proposed timeline. If you are planning on continuing your MSRP project for the RDT, then you may submit the same application but with the final MSRP report, timeline, CV, updated mentor approval letter, and the front page of the RDT Application form filled out (MSRP application forms cannot be submitted instead).

3) Fill out an Application of Intent for Research Distinction Track – after this form is submitted, you may start counting attendance to research seminars and MRSA organized Journal Clubs and Datablitz sessions. You may NOT start counting hours until your proposal is approved by the Medical Student Research Committee.

4) Look for a mentor or find a mentor on your own:

5) Before approaching the professor, pick up a copy of the course outline for yourself (if you don't have one) and one for your professor.

6) Set up an appointment with the professor.

7) If there is agreement, submit the RDT Application form with attachments to be submitted to the Medical Student Research Committee for approval.

8) Enroll for SURG800A: Research Distinction Track through Oasis. (Keep in mind students cannot officially enroll in SURG800A until the 4th year, you can submit your application and begin your fellowship anytime between years 1 and 4.) However, after proposal is approved, you will be enrolled in SURG500A (checklist).

9) Keep an eye out for future e-mail notices regarding research seminars and MRSA sponsored journal clubs and datablitz sessions that can be attended to help fulfill the requirements of the course.
